Agate is formed in an hydro-thermal environment in volcanic rocks with little silicic acid. Cavities are formed in the lava as it cools because of the presence of air bubbles which collect hot solutions of this acid, which in turn forms tiny crystals on cooling. Agate in nature may be grey, sky blue, red, blue or green.
